Hey! Hope you're having a great day so far. This week I've been looking into the Stress in America report from 2022, and it has some fascinating stories to tell. The report was published by The American Psychological Association and the researchers surveyed 3192 adults in the US. Here are some numbers: 76% of adults said that the future of the United States is a significant source of stress in their lives. 75% reported that crime and violence are significant sources of stress. 83% said inflation, and 66% said money. The problem is that these stressors are often out of a person's control. Unless you're Batman, the crime level in your city is not under your control. While you do have some control over your own financial situation, there's little you can do about the economy at large. Unlike problems you can handle and be done with, these stress factors can lead to a lasting sense of unease. And it has real effects on people's mental health. In the weeks before the survey: 21% had experienced forgetfulness. 20% had experienced an inability to concentrate. 17% had experienced difficulty making decisions due to stress. Now this is where it gets interesting from a mind-body perspective... 76% reported negative life and health impacts due to stress in the past month! Specifically regarding: Among the symptoms were: That means over three-quarters of the U.S. population experienced a decline in mental and physical health due to stress in the weeks leading up to the survey! To make things even crazier: 27% of adults say they're so stressed that they can't function most days! Now to the good news. You can learn to handle, manage and master stress. It is not something you are a victim of. With enough practice, you can learn to relax your mind and body intentionally. We'll come back to that in future newsletters.
